If you`re having troube getting the keyboard to light up in the dark, try this: cup your hand over the screen while the screen is on so that your hand reflects some light onto the sensor next to the earpiece for a second or two. The change in lighting conditions should trigger the light sensor to do its job and turn on your keyboard backlight.
